PVC Camera POD

September 18, 2009

I want a tripod, but some of them are in the 20-30$ range, and I wanted to see if I can build my own.

I did however build myself a pvc light tent a year back, so ive taken parts of if apart and started to think and build a stand for the tripod. Tripod have three legs to set up, but my version as a Do It Yourself er has four leg types for support.

I searched on Google and YouTube for the basic words, “PVC”, “Camera” , “Tripod” , and “Monopod”. Ive seen some pictures of other projects, and begun to think of their ideas and incorporating them into my design.

I came up with two basic builds, which are; the Camera Arm, and the Monopod.

I had to think of a way to be able to use a single pipe and be able to move my camera up and down without using different lengths of pipe, would be aggravating to carry so many pipes. To my finding, I found a package called “Add on Repair TEE, just glue nap & twist, No Drilling, Tee with 1/2 Threading riser for the 3/4“. I looked at the pictures, and it demonstrates just connecting this anywhere onto the 3/4 pipe, and be able to cut it or add a TEE anywhere without buying an extra Tee. With this item, I can move it up and down my 5 feet pipe.

This is still a work in progress and I can change any features that i wish. I will need someone to record me to show you how it works, I only can take pictures of right now, but I will see over this weekend.

CAMERA ARM
(1) 1/4″ x 1″ bolt
(2) 1/4″ nuts
(1) 3/4 pvc plug [1.29]
(1) 3/4 coupling SLIP [0.29]
(1) 2″ inch pvc pipe
(1) 3/4 tee SLIP [0.59]
(1) 3/4″ SLIP x 1/2″T [0.79]
(1) 1/2″ x 1/2″ Fastener [0.49]
(1) TEE Repair 3/4×3/4×1/2T [6.49]

MONOPOD
(1) 5 Feet pvc pipe [1.99 cutable]
(1) 3/4 tee SLIP [0.59]
(2) 2″ inch pvc pipe
(2) 3/4 tee SLIP [2x0.59]
(2) 2″ inch pvc pipe
(2) 3/4 tee SLIP [2x0.59]
(2) 2″ inch pvc pipe
(4) 3/4 elbow SLIP [4x0.39]

With the items I had before and items that i need to buy, this
project was only 16.85 total.

Here are some photographs;

I must find a better 3/4 pipe with a thinker inner diameter because the 3/4 pipe i got is very unsafe with my digital slr. It seems to be fine with my smaller point & shot camera. I think tomorrow I will be going back to the hardware store.
